Whitepaper: Multi-Factor Authentication Solution

Multi-Factor Authentication Solution from Outthink cybersecurity

A successful cyberattack can result in irreparable reputational or financial damage to yourself and those you work with. As the world becomes more connected, cybercriminals have many more potential pathways to sensitive data which they can exploit. Many attacks target online accounts, which is why multifactor authentication (MFA) is now a vital tool in securing them.

MFA, also known as two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security to protect online accounts and devices. Chances are, you’re probably already using it for several online accounts, particularly those with sensitive data like payment information. MFA requires users to verify their identities, especially if they’re logging into an account from an unfamiliar device or location. It combines two (or sometimes even  more) verification factors, such as the following:

• Something you know, like a username and password

• Something you are, such as a biometric marker like a fingerprint or face recognition

• Something you have, such as a trusted device or one-time security code

The basic premise here is that it’s exponentially harder for an attacker to get their hands on two or more types of information than just one. For example, a password may easily be stolen via a social engineering scam. However, if the attacker doesn’t have access to the second authentication method, they’ll still be unable to access the account.
